Brazil

Research for sustainability is an important aspect of the German sustainability strategy. Given the global dimensions of many sustainability-related challenges, research for sustainability needs to be linked to international policies and international sustainability research. In this context, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has proposed the establishment of a dialogue on research for sustainability with Brazil to develop a joint strategy for long-term research on sustainability issues.

The dialogue with Brazil was initiated with a bilateral workshop (C1) on 13 March 2009, which took place in connection with the ECOGERMA trade fair. On this occasion, Federal Minister Prof. Annette Schavan and Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Sergio Machado Rezende signed a declaration of intent concerning the German-Brazilian Dialogue for Sustainability on Research Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation (12 March 2009).

The objectives of the dialogue between Germany and Brazil include:

  • to jointly develop a long-term and strategic agenda of research cooperation centred on sustainability;
  • to develop joint contributions to a global research agenda in the field of sustainability that can be included in the process of multilateral dialogue in the future;
  • to intensify bilateral cooperation in research in the area of sustainability with a view to future themes.

In order to initiate and develop joint activities under the dialogue, the BMBF initiated the organization of the first of a series of research workshops, bringing together researchers, industry representatives and other stakeholders to discuss those issues at a scientific level.

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • to exchange views on key challenges and opportunities for sustainability-oriented innovation;
  • to foster networking and collaboration among scientists in both countries;
  • to develop a roadmap for the dialogue and to identify topics for possible joint research projects.

Future themes between Brazil and Germany might be:

  • land use, water, climate, waste management, environmental technologies, renewable energy, biodiversity, transportation and logistics, sustainability in buildings.
