    1. September 2009: Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) / OSRAM Opto Semiconductors

    In the area of environmental technologies, the UFZ specializes on decentralized water treatment systems and uses new processes and monitoring technologies to conduct research on the ground and on groundwater. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors develops light-emitting diodes (LEDs) amongst others, a technology that will, in future, contribute to saving energy in a targeted way. In theory, the use of highly-efficient LEDs could almost halve the amount of energy used for lighting.

    2. September 2009: Fraunhofer Alliance SysWater, Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB - DEUS 21

    In the area of environmental technology, the Fraunhofer IGB is developing efficient process technologies for water and wastewater treatment and for the generation of biogas from organic waste materials as well as conducting research on technologies for the sustainable production of high-value products and energy using aquatic microalgae.
