German Biomass Research Centre - DBFZ

Basic research into the energy of the future
Founded in 2008, the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) aims to improve our knowledge about the use of biomass for energy. This will contribute to increase the acceptance for the use of biomass, help to develop new products for the German industry, improve climate protection and increase the security of our energy supply. New processes and concepts are developed in close cooperation with other research institutions as well as with industry. DBFZ also develops science-based decision-making aids for politicians and advises private and public institutions on all issues related to energy from biomass.


Biomass - economically and environmentally promising
DBFZ's research is dedicated towards establishing the use of biomass for energy on a long-term basis within the German and the world wide energy system. In order to be sustainable, energy from biomass needs to be economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially acceptable. This means that researchers have to take the entire utilization chain - from the production of biomass via its supply till its use as a source of energy - into account.


Strengthening the international research network
There is a great deal of interest in biomass as a climatic sound source of energy, not only on the German market, but also internationally. For this reason, DBFZ is also involved in international R&D-oriented networks. For this reason DBFZ has established a special unit dedicated to international matters. This unit aims to support the exchange of researchers and promote cooperation with research institutions in non-European countries that are key players in biomass and bio energy (e.g. USA, Brazil), in Eastern European countries, and in selected countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
